About Me

“Just plain, simple John.”

That’s how I often introduce myself. But it’s a misnomer. There is nothing plain or simple about me. In point of fact, I’m actually a very complex person. As Shrek might say, I’m an onion.

Let’s see… I enjoy tabletop role-playing games, like Dungeons & Dragons, but you could probably have guessed that from the other pages on this site. Savage Worlds is my favorite game system. I’m drawn to the complex simplicity of it. Isn’t that an oxymoron? Not really. The system is deceptively simple on first glance. Roll a die equal to your skill rating, and if you roll a 4 or higher, you succeed. But wait! You also get a wild die. You use either the original roll or the wild die, whichever is higher. And if you roll the maximum amount possible on either die, that’s called an Ace. You get to roll again and add the result to the original roll. And if you Ace again, you get to add that roll to the original and roll again, ad infinitum. See? Complex simplicity.

So yeah, I’m a nerd. I’m also married (more than 35 years), and I share living space with four cats: Wingnut, Lunar, Poly, and Cinderella. My wife and I live with her brother, who himself has a dog (Liberty, or Libby), which he inherited from his late father. In addition, my wife and I care for the seven feral cats that live around our house. So I’m also an animal lover.

I’m a student of history and science with a passion for both. I enjoy science fiction, fantasy, and horror, and I can’t resist a good (or even a bad) shark movie.
